SA:Police hunt for clues after triple murder
ADELAIDE, April 30 AAP - Police are still baffled why a man gunned down three neighbours
who had moved to Australia from South Africa for safety reasons.
Police spent Saturday scouring two homes in Adelaide for clues after a man turned on
his neighbours early on Friday, killing three and wounding a teenage boy and a police
officer who had come to their rescue.
Donato Anthony Corbo, a 39-year-old from Hectorville in the city's northeast, will
face court on Monday charged with three counts of murder and two of attempted murder after
the shooting spree and an eight-hour standoff with police.
Corbo allegedly murdered a man, 64, his wife, 65, their son-in-law, 41, and wounded
his 14-year-old son and a policeman. The family are believed to be from South Africa.
The couple's daughter and an 11-year-old boy who was staying at the house escaped uninjured.
Police have reportedly removed three guns from the home where Corbo lived with his parents.
Detective Inspector Denise Gray said detectives still did not know why the victims
were killed, with apparently no disputes between the neighbours.
"There doesn't appear to be any motive," Insp Gray told the Nine Network on Saturday.
It is understood the murdered couple were visiting Australia from South Africa and
were staying with their daughter's family.
Neighbour Stephen Whitehead said the South African family's daughter had moved to Australia
for a safer life.
"It's pretty ironic that they moved her for safety reasons, and how this has happened
to them, it's very sad," Mr Whitehead told the Nine Network.
They had just become settled and "kind of made a go here, and got established in jobs", he said.
A member of their church said they were a deeply religious family and "they were lovely
people, they wouldn't hurt anyone".
Police were alerted by a frantic call at 2.30am (CST) on Friday from the woman who
survived, saying shots were being fired into their front door on Montacute Road.
The gunman shot at officers after they arrived, striking one of them in the jaw, while
a second officer injured his knee.
The man fled next door to his own home and held police at bay for eight tense hours
before he gave himself up.
The wounded boy went to hospital in a stable condition while the officer who was shot
was deemed serious but stable and placed in an induced coma with surgery expected on his
jaw.
On Saturday, police continued to search the victims' home and the home of the gunman
to determine what led to the tragedy.
Insp Gray said the swimming pool at one of the homes had also been drained for possible evidence.
"There's obviously two houses that need to be processed basically inch by inch, so
there's a tremendous amount of work involved," she told the ABC.
The alleged gunman was refused bail.

QLD:Katter urges union to save sugar industry

QLD:Katter urges union to save sugar industry
GOLD COAST, Feb 15 AAP - Federal independent MP Bob Katter has urged the Australian
Workers' Union to help save Queensland's sugar industry from ruin by campaigning for wider
ethanol use.
The north Queensland MP made the plea at the powerful union's biennial conference on Tuesday.
"I'm on my best bended knees, I personally, desperately need, and the 200,000 Australians
that I represent, desperately need, the AWU," Mr Katter told the conference.
"At this point of time in Queensland, the sugar industry is a bigger employer than
the coal industry and it's simply closing down."
Seven Queensland sugar mills had closed in nine years, leaving only 22 - about the
same number Brazil was opening every year, Mr Katter claimed.
Just last week the Babinda sugar mill, south of Cairns, announced it will be shutting
down and more than 60 jobs will be lost.
Legislation in Australia limits ethanol use to 10 per cent of petrol and, unless that
changed, there was no hope for the industry's 50,000 workers, he said.
Mr Katter said federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott had been receptive to the issue
when he was seeking support from the independents to form a minority government, but it
had been a coalition government that limited ethanol production.
Queensland's Labor Premier Anna Bligh had been just as inactive, he said.
"The NSW government has moved and they haven't got any sugar," he told reporters.
The AWU will on Wednesday launch an anti-trade dumping campaign, a principle Mr Katter
- with his banana and cane-growing constituency - supported.
"This country now is right down to only two industries. All we've got left in this
country is iron ore and coal," he said.
"Sure they're going through the roof, well, make the best of it, you've got an economy
now that instead of having 20 or 30 items, now has only two.
"You're on the narrowest of narrow economic foundations."

NSW:Man, 17, dies after Sydney street fight
SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - A 17-year-old man died from multiple stab wounds after a fight
in a western Sydney street, police say.
The teenager was stabbed in the back and chest and died on his way to hospital following
the fight about 3.20am (AEDT) in Maple Road, North St Marys on Wednesday.
Police said a group of three men, including the man who died, were walking along Maple
Road when two other males approached them.
"An altercation has taken place and one of the males, being the deceased ... was stabbed
a number of times with a sharp implement," Superintendent Ray Filewood told Fairfax Radio
Network.
"He actually was taken to the hospital and in fact died en route to Nepean Hospital."
Supt Filewood said a canvass of the area was being carried out by detectives and a
strike force had been set up by the State Crime Command's homicide squad.
The offenders were described as Caucasian and were wearing dark clothing.
Supt Filewood appealed for information to catch the killer.

Financial Services Minister Chris Bowen welcomed the discounted fees and called for
other banks to follow suit.
"The other banks need to respond accordingly and also we'd like to see further action
from banks on fees including exit fees on mortgages, et cetera, that cause so much community
anger," he told reporters in Canberra.
He claimed credit for prompting the bank responses so far, which, he said, was driven
by the government's proposed unfair contracts law.
The new legislation should be in place by January.
"That will give individuals and regulators the opportunity to begin action if there's
any fee that's not part of the upfront cost, that is regarded as being unfair," he said.
"I think partly, although not completely, but partly the banks have been responding
to that coming in."

Alianza and Aptilo Team to Integrate Hosted Voice Platform and WiMAX Service Management Solution
Type: News
Alianza, a provider of hosted voice over WiMAX solutions, and Aptilo Networks, a supplier of integrated management solutions for control of billing, user services and access in WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks, announced they have formed a partnership to integrate Aptilo's WiMAX service management solution with Alianza's hosted voice platform.
The companies said the partnership will provide WiMAX service providers with advanced management and billing capabilities that will speed deployment of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offerings to residential and business customers.
Alianza has certified the standards-compliant Aptilo WiMAX CSN (Connectivity Service Network) System with its hosted voice platform to provide a seamless back-office experience. Aptilo WiMAX CSN is the market's first integrated wireless broadband data and voice services solution for standards compliant mobile WiMAX authentication, authorization, accounting (AAA), policy management and service control. It is a flexible, multi-access (WiMAX/Wi-Fi) platform for service providers to deliver on revenue objectives and meet their time-to-market deadlines, while requiring minimal integration.
"Aptilo offers a superior service management system that is specifically designed for mobile WiMAX networks starting with a few thousand users and rapidly growing into large carrier networks," said Brian Beutler, CEO, Alianza. "This fits perfectly with Alianza's hosted voice service that gives WiMAX service providers the ability to increase market share and margin by quickly deploying a fully integrated voice solution."
With the integration of Aptilo's system, Alianza customers will benefit from comprehensive reporting and statistics tracking tools that process and present data on service usage such as subscriber sessions, payment history, and bandwidth usage. The integrated data and voice services provide authentication, authorization and accounting through multiple authentication types, with support for VoIP services and prepaid data.
"Alianza's hosted voice platform allows WiMAX service providers to quickly add a voice offering to their broadband service -- with no capital expenditure," said Torbjorn Ward, CEO, Aptilo Networks. "Aptilo's WiMAX solutions, available as a hosted offering as well as software licenses, shorten the critical time-to-deploy and time-to- revenue cycles. We are excited to work with Alianza to support its growing customer base of service providers around the world."

Fed: 13 per cent of motorists are offsetting their emissions
CANBERRA, April 16 AAP - One third of motorists are unwilling to pay to offset the
carbon cost of driving, a new survey shows.
The AAMI survey of 2,503 people also revealed that just 13 per cent of drivers were
offsetting their emissions already.
"However, the research shows that there is some willingness among drivers to pay to
offset their emissions, with 24 per cent prepared to pay up to $50, nine per cent between
$51 and $100, and two per cent between $101 and $150 to offset their car emissions," AAMI's
public affairs manager Geoff Hughes said in a statement today.
Carbon offset schemes involve drivers calculating how far they drive per year, then
paying approved organisations to plant forests to offset carbon emissions.
Only two per cent of drivers would pay more than $150 to offset their emissions, the
survey found.
Mr Hughes offered some basic tips for saving petrol and therefore saving emissions including:
* Use the throttle smoothly when accelerating by depressing the pedal lightly and slowly.
* Avoid peak-hour traffic where possible.
* Look ahead to maintain momentum and avoid frequent stopping and starting.
* Check and adjust your tyre pressure regularly.
* Switch off your engine when caught in a traffic jam.

The Transport Workers Union says Australia's roads will become more dangerous if the
federal government's skilled worker visa scheme is expanded to include truck drivers.
The controversial 457 visa scheme allows Australian businesses to import workers from
overseas temporarily if they cannot fill skilled vacancies locally.
While the scheme doesn't currently cover truck drivers .. TWU national secretary TONY
SHELDON says the federal government is being lobbied to extend the program to include
them.
Mr SHELDON says overseas drivers posed a risk because they are unfamiliar with Australian
conditions and willing to work for less money.

WA: $20,000 funding boost for bid to identify shipwreck
PERTH, April 6 AAP - Attempts to prove a shipwreck discovered off the West Australian
coast is that of a Portuguese vessel lost in 1816 have been boosted by a $20,000 funding
pledge from the federal government.
Last year archaeologists from the WA Maritime Museum discovered the exact point they
believe the Correio da Azia went down en route from Lisbon to Macau.
After a magnetic survey of the area of reef indicated the location, experts recovered
some objects from the depths.
However, more dives are needed to confirm the wreck is that of the Correio da Azia,
which has been sought for more than 16 years.
In Fremantle today, federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell said the government,
through the Historic Shipwrecks Program, would donate $22,728 to enable the museum to
continue its research.
"Every shipwreck is a watery time capsule with a story waiting to be told," the minister said.
"Divers will recover coins and artefacts from the site. It is hoped the recovered coins
will be dated, and if they are no later than 1816 then this will help to support the theory
that the wreck is that of the Correio da Azia."
It is thought the Correio da Azia would have been armed and carrying mail, important
passengers and special goods when it went down.
The captain's account of the wreck, discovered in a Lisbon archive in 1988, described
how the ship went down in the early hours of the morning after being taken too close to
the coast by a strong current.
Despite warnings from the lookouts, the ship struck the reef twice and lost its rudder.
Unable to steer and taking on water, the Correio da Azia sank but the crew, which had
taken to ship's launch, survived.

USDA selects Symantec for agency-wide protection.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has purchased a software license permitting the deployment of Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise Edition across the federal agency's desktops and servers to defend against malicious code and cyber attacks. The license was purchased through CDW-G, a leading provider of technology to government and educational institutions.
Government agencies face ongoing security risks from viruses, worms and sophisticated blended threats, such as Code Red, Nimda and Klez, that target network vulnerabilities, rapidly infect via multiple means, compromise data and co-opt networks during coordinated cyber attacks. Symantec's antivirus technology gives USDA strong safeguards against malicious incidents that could adversely impact the agency's ability to execute its regulatory, research and commerce development missions.
Established in 1862, USDA oversees 192 million acres of national forests and rangelands, ensures the quality of consumers' meat, egg and poultry products and conducts pioneering research in agricultural sciences. USDA includes, among other agencies, the Forest Service (FS), Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) and the Farm Service Agency (FSA).
Under the terms of a five-year blanket purchase agreement through CDW-G; which includes one base year and four one-year options, Symantec AntiVirus will protect up to 114,000 USDA servers and desktops agency-wide. In support of USDA's purchase, Symantec personnel will provide USDA with proactive technical support and 24x7 live telephone support from dedicated security experts. In addition, the Symantec Security Response team will send alerts to USDA, via pager, e-mail, phone, or fax, regarding the latest threats so that immediate agency action can be taken.
"Given the size of USDA's networks and the agency's diverse range of offices, superior technology, scalability and reliability are key criteria for selecting their security solutions," said Vincent Steckler, vice president, public sector at Symantec. "Symantec's partnership with USDA safeguards both the agency's IT assets and the interests of citizens benefiting from USDA's efforts in food safety, scientific research and trade promotion."
